Catherine Ford, born in Bloomsbury (London) She was raised by her mother, her grandmother, and her godparents. Her father left her family. As a child Ford was afflicted with anxiety due to an obsessional-compulsive disorder. Ford was interested in the acting profession during her teens and became a member of the National Youth Theatre. She gained admission to the Sylvia Young Theatre School, but after just a few days, decided that she was a poor for the school. Ford instead applied to the Central School of Speech and Drama which she was eventually able to get an acceptance on her fourth attempt. Shaun Dingwall - who later played Pete Tyler in Doctor Who was also one of Ford's classmates. Ford graduated in 1993. She made her television debut on a show in 1992 called Surgical Spirit. She adopted the title Catherine Tate. Tate appeared in TV shows such as The Bill, Men Behaving Badly as well as London's Burning during the Nineties. Tate's regular involvement in the theatre has led to her joining the Royal Shakespeare Company, for the 2000-2001 season. Tate was first noticed due to her stand-up comedy in the year 1996.
